Nancy Guthrie was reported missing on Sunday, Feb.1, after not showing up for church, and the sheriff said it appeared she was abducted from her home in Tucson, Arizona. Her family has been pleading for her return.<\/p>\n
Savannah Guthrie and her two siblings have appealed directly to whoever may have taken their mother. The FBI said it was taking two emails seriously, including what appeared to be a ransom note with a second deadline that passed Monday.<\/p>\n

Jan. 31: Nancy Guthrie last seen<\/p>\n
Nancy Guthrie was last seen on Saturday night, Jan. 31, authorities said. She arrived at her daughter Annie\u2019s home at 5:32 p.m. She dined there and was dropped off at her own home after dinner at around 9:48 p.m.<\/p>\n
She was dropped off at home by her son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni. Police say he waited until Nancy Guthrie was inside before driving off.<\/p>\n
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said at a news conference Thursday that her garage door closed at 9:50 p.m., at which time authorities assume Nancy Guthrie was home and going to bed.<\/p>\n
Feb. 1: Not at church<\/p>\n
A doorbell camera at Nancy Guthrie\u2019s home disconnected at 1:47 a.m., and software detected someone, or possibly an animal, on a camera about 25 minutes later, Nanos said, but he noted no video is available.<\/p>\n
Guthrie\u2019s pacemaker app showed a disconnect from her phone at 2:28 a.m.<\/p>\n
On Sunday morning, a friend called Guthrie\u2019s family, telling them she had not shown up for church. They notified the sheriff\u2019s department around noon that day, minutes after checking in on her.<\/p>\n
Once police arrived at the home at 12:15 p.m, they determined Nancy Guthrie was missing under \u201cconcerning\u201d circumstances.<\/p>\n
Guthrie has limited mobility and relies on daily medication for her health, officials have said. That prompted an urgent search for her in Arizona on Sunday night.<\/p>\n
Feb. 2: Sheriff says \u201cI believe she was abducted\u201d<\/p>\n
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos confirmed on Monday that her disappearance was being treated as a crime, and urged neighbors to review home video camera footage.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe saw some things at the home that were concerning to us,\u201d Nanos told reporters. \u201cWe believe now after we\u2019ve processed that crime scene that we do in fact have a crime scene, that we do in fact have a crime, and we\u2019re asking the community\u2019s help.\u201d<\/p>\n
He\u00a0told CBS News<\/span>\u00a0he believed Guthrie was \u201cabducted\u201d in the middle of the night.<\/p>\n \u201cI believe she was abducted, yes,\u201d Nanos said. \u201cShe didn\u2019t walk from there. She didn\u2019t go willingly.\u201d<\/p>\n A missing person\u2019s flier from the sheriff\u2019s department described her as 5 feet, 5 inches tall, with brown hair and blue eyes and weighing 150 pounds.<\/p>\n Feb. 3: Ransom note and blood at scene<\/p>\n On Tuesday, authorities said they were analyzing an apparent\u00a0ransom note<\/span>\u00a0with details about what the 84-year-old was wearing on the night of the crime.\u00a0The note demanded payment in bitcoin<\/span>.<\/p>\n \u201cWe are aware of reports circulating about possible ransom note(s) regarding the investigation into Nancy Guthrie,\u201d Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said in a\u00a0social media statement. \u201cWe are taking all tips and leads very seriously. Anything that comes in, goes directly to our detectives who are coordinating with the FBI.\u201d<\/p>\n They were also looking at what appeared to be drops of blood outside the front door. A law enforcement source also told CBS News some was also found\u00a0inside the house<\/span>.<\/p>\n The blood found outside Nancy Guthrie\u2019s home has been confirmed to be hers, Nanos later said, adding that investigators were awaiting results from additional samples.<\/p>\n Authorities said surveillance video from the home had led nowhere, and there was still no suspect.<\/p>\n \u201cNothing has come up that says, \u2018Here he is, here\u2019s your bad guy,’\u201d Nanos told CBS News on Tuesday.<\/p>\n Feb. 4: Video appeal from Savannah Guthrie<\/p>\n Authorities said\u00a0Wednesday morning\u00a0that investigators still had not identified a suspect or person of interest in the case.<\/p>\n \u201cDetectives continue to speak with anyone who may have had contact with Mrs. Guthrie,\u201d the Pima County Sheriff\u2019s Department said on social media.<\/p>\n On Wednesday night, the FBI was back at Nancy Guthrie\u2019s home, using canines to search as they worked to track down every lead.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Savannah Guthrie released an emotional video pleading for her mother\u2019s return and saying her family is \u201cready to talk.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe live in a world where voices and images are easily manipulated. We need to know without a doubt that she is alive and that you have her,\u201d Savannah Guthrie said in the video with her two siblings, addressing a possible captor or captors. \u201cWe want to hear from you, and we are ready to listen. Please, reach out to us.\u201d<\/p>\n Savannah Guthrie said her mother\u2019s health and heart are fragile.<\/p>\n \u201cShe lives in constant pain. She is without any medicine. She needs it to survive. She needs it not to suffer,\u201d Savannah Guthrie said.<\/p>\n She also addressed her mom directly, saying: \u201cMommy, if you are hearing this, you are a strong woman. You are God\u2019s precious daughter, Nancy. We believe and know that even in this valley, He is with you. Everyone is looking for you, mommy, everywhere. We will not rest, your children will not rest, until we are together again.\u201d<\/p>\n Around the same time that video was released, President Trump said on social media that he spoke with Savannah Guthrie \u201cand let her know that I am directing ALL Federal Law Enforcement to be at the family\u2019s, and Local Law Enforcement\u2019s, complete disposal, IMMEDIATELY.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe are deploying all resources to get her mother home safely,\u201d he posted.<\/p>\n Feb. 5: \u201cStill out there\u201d<\/p>\n Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said at a news conference Thursday, \u201cWe believe Nancy is still out there.\u201d He also said that as of late morning local time, authorities had not identified a suspect or a person of interest.<\/p>\n A ransom note that investigators said they\u2019re taking seriously included a deadline of 5 p.m. Thursday, Heith Janke, the special agent in charge of the FBI\u2019s field office in Phoenix, said at the news conference.<\/p>\n \u201cIf a transfer wasn\u2019t made, then I think a second demand was for next Monday,\u201d Janke said. He wouldn\u2019t provide details about what the note said would happen if the demands weren\u2019t met.<\/p>\n Separately, an alleged impostor was arrested for making a phony ransom demand in the case, Janke said.<\/p>\n Authorities are continuing to ask for the public\u2019s help and urging anyone with possible information to contact them. The FBI announced a\u00a0$50,000 reward\u00a0for information leading to Nancy Guthrie\u2019s recovery or the arrest and conviction of people involved in her disappearance.<\/p>\n \u201cIt only takes one tip, just one, to break the case open, to offer that lead that we so desperately need in this case,\u201d chief of detectives for the Pima County Attorney\u2019s Office, Fabian Pacheco, who oversees one of the tip lines, told CBS News in an interview that aired on \u201cCBS Mornings\u201d Thursday.<\/p>\n He said about 10% of leads have value.<\/p>\n Anyone with information is being urged to call (520)-882-7463.<\/p>\n In a video posted to Savannah Guthrie\u2019s Instagram account on Thursday night, her brother\u00a0Camron Guthrie made another appeal<\/span>\u00a0for the return of their mother.<\/p>\n \u201cWhoever is out there holding our mother, we want to hear from you,\u201d Camron Guthrie said. \u201cWe haven\u2019t heard anything directly. We need you to reach out, and we need a way to communicate with you so we can move forward. But first, we have to know that you have our mom. We want to talk to you, and we are waiting for contact.\u201d<\/p>\n Feb. 6: Authorities say they\u2019re \u201caware of a new message\u201d<\/p>\n A\u00a0second message\u00a0was sent to CBS News\u2019 Tucson affiliate KOLD on Friday. The station said it would not release details about its contents, citing respect for the family and the investigation.<\/p>\n Local and federal authorities said they\u2019re \u201caware of a new message<\/span>\u201d regarding Nancy Guthrie\u2019s disappearance.<\/p>\n \u201cInvestigators are actively inspecting the information provided in the message for its authenticity,\u201d the Pima County Sheriff\u2019s Department said in a post on social media. The FBI also posted a similar statement on social media. It\u2019s unclear what kind of message it is.<\/p>\n In\u00a0another social media post\u00a0just after 4 p.m. local time Friday, the sheriff\u2019s department said investigators were \u201cconducting follow-up\u201d at the home of Nancy Guthrie and \u201csurrounding areas.\u201d<\/p>\n FBI agents removed a camera from the roof of Nancy Guthrie\u2019s home and towed a dark-colored SUV from her garage.<\/p>\n Feb. 7: Savannah Guthrie says \u201cwe will pay\u201d for Nancy\u2019s safe return<\/p>\n Savannah Guthrie and her two siblings\u00a0posted a new video to social media<\/span>\u00a0Saturday that appeared to be directed at the alleged abductor or abductors, in which she acknowledged having \u201creceived a message,\u201d and said that the Guthrie family would be willing to pay to see the safe return of Nancy Guthrie.<\/p>\n \u201cWe received your message and we understand,\u201d Guthrie said in the short video, appearing alongside her siblings Annie and Camron Guthrie. \u201cWe beg you now to return our mother to us so that we can celebrate with her. This is the only way we will have peace. This is very valuable to us and we will pay.\u201d<\/p>\n An FBI spokesman said Savannah Guthrie was referring to the message sent to KOLD the day before, The Associated Press reported.<\/p>\n A few hours after the video was released, investigators went to the home of Nancy Guthrie\u2019s daughter Annie, where she had dinner the night before she disappeared. They were there for about 2.5 hours and focused primarily on the garage of the home.<\/p>\n Two law enforcement sources told CBS News on Saturday that investigators were \u201cdeveloping good information\u201d but that \u201cnothing is imminent.\u201d<\/p>\n Feb. 8: Detectives back at the scene<\/p>\n Sheriff detectives were at Nancy Guthrie\u2019s home on Sunday, focusing on the property\u2019s perimeter along the backyard. Investigators also searched what appeared to be a septic tank in the backyard.<\/p>\n Feb. 9: Savannah Guthrie pleads for public\u2019s help<\/p>\n A second ransom deadline was looming Monday as the search for Nancy Guthrie entered its second week.<\/p>\n CBS News has learned investigators are canvassing nearby gas stations in an effort to track down any suspicious vehicles captured on surveillance cameras around the time Nancy Guthrie went missing.<\/p>\n A sheriff\u2019s deputy will now be stationed outside Nancy Guthrie\u2019s home, around the clock, for security purposes.<\/p>\n On Monday afternoon, Savannah Guthrie\u00a0issued a plea for the public\u2019s assistance<\/span>, saying the family is \u201cat an hour of desperation and we need your help.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cLaw enforcement is working tirelessly around the clock trying to bring her home, trying to find her,\u201d Savannah said of her mom. \u201cShe was taken and we don\u2019t know where, and we need your help.\u201d She asked the public, \u201ceven if you\u2019re far from Tucson,\u201d if someone sees or hears anything, or \u201cif there\u2019s anything at all that seems strange to you,\u201d to report it to law enforcement.<\/p>\n The FBI reiterated that the agency has not identified a suspect or person of interest in the case so far.<\/p>\n Anyone with possible information on Nancy Guthrie\u2019s disappearance is asked to call 520-882-7463.<\/p>\n Feb. 10: Surveillance images released; person detained hours later<\/p>\n FBI Director Kash PateI\u00a0and the Pima County Sheriff\u2019s Department in Arizona\u00a0posted surveillance images<\/span>\u00a0and video of a subject in Nancy Guthrie\u2019s disappearance, showing a masked person wearing a backpack and gloves at her door.<\/p>\n The FBI said law enforcement agencies were able to recover data of the previously inaccessible images from the home security camera system.<\/p>\n Two of the images released by the FBI of a subject seen on surveillance video in the Nancy Guthrie case. \/ Credit: FBI<\/p>\n The images show an armed individual appearing to tamper with the camera at her front door on the morning Guthrie went missing. A\u00a014-second video\u00a0shows the person facing the camera and holding a flashlight in their mouth before covering the camera lens with some vegetation.<\/p>\n Two law enforcement sources told CBS News the man in the images is considered a subject that they were seeking to identify.<\/p>\n Savannah Guthrie reacted to the images,\u00a0writing\u00a0on social media: \u201cWe believe she is still alive. Bring her home.\u201d<\/p>\n Hours later, the Pima County Sheriff\u2019s Department said a subject had been\u00a0detained during a traffic stop<\/span>\u00a0south of Tucson and was being questioned in connection with Nancy Guthrie\u2019s disappearance.<\/p>\n The person was taken into custody following a traffic stop in Rio Rico, Arizona, a small community located just north of the Mexican border, two sources familiar with the investigation told CBS News. Pima County Sheriff\u2019s investigators, with the assistance of the FBI, were searching the Rio Rico residence of the person of interest, the sources said.<\/p>\n The sheriff\u2019s department did not specify if the person detained was the same person seen in the videos.<\/p>\n Feb. 11: \u201cI didn\u2019t do anything,\u201d man says<\/p>\n A man who says he was the person of interest being questioned in the kidnapping has been released. The man, who only wanted to be identified as Carlos,\u00a0spoke with reporters early Wednesday\u00a0outside his home in Rio Rico, Arizona, saying he was shocked when he got pulled over, and doesn\u2019t know who Guthrie is or why law enforcement thought he might be connected to her disappearance.<\/p>\n \u201cI didn\u2019t do anything. \u2026 I\u2019m innocent,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Authorities haven\u2019t confirmed Carlos was the person of interest or that the person of interest has been released.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, a woman in Rio Rico, Josefina Maddox, told reporters her son-in-law was the person of interest but had \u201cnothing to do with it.\u201d There was no confirmation of her assertions.<\/p>\n Maddox also told reporters outside a home authorities were searching that the home is hers. She said \u201cthey\u2019re just invading my property\u201d and that \u201cwe\u2019re not hiding anything. \u2026 You won\u2019t find anything because we don\u2019t have nothing to hide.\u201d<\/p>\n Angelica Carrillo, a spokesperson for the Pima County Sheriff\u2019s Department, told CBS News early Wednesday that Nancy Guthrie still hasn\u2019t been found.<\/p>\n There\u2019s finally a face \u2014 albeit a masked one \u2014 to the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, which had largely baffled investigators for over a week.<\/p>\n As the search for Guthrie\u00a0entered its 10th day, the Federal Bureau of Investigation\u00a0released photos and videos retrieved from her Google Nest doorbell camera\u00a0that captured an armed, masked man with a medium build approaching her front door.<\/p>\n The man also appears to wear disposable gloves and a backpack, with a handgun holstered near his groin.<\/p>\n A video clip shows the man initially trying to block the doorbell camera with his hand before retrieving a branch from a nearby plant to help obscure the camera. He is holding what appears to be a flashlight in his mouth.<\/p>\n Droplets of blood outside the front door of the house that authorities confirmed to be Guthrie\u2019s don\u2019t appear to be present in the video.<\/p>\n One of the videos, shared by FBI Director Kash Patel, included the suspect approaching Guthrie\u2019s front door as a light turns on that possibly came from an activated headlamp. The man looks down almost immediately after the light turns on when the light deactivates. He continues to look down as he walks toward the front door during the four-second clip.<\/p>\n The man appears to have facial hair near his mouth based on the released video and images.<\/p>\n The word \u201cNest\u201d is displayed in the upper-righthand corner of the video, seeming to indicate the doorbell camera was part of Google\u2019s line of smart home appliances that includes surveillance cameras, smart speakers and thermostats.<\/p>\n The images weren\u2019t immediately available after Guthrie\u2019s disappearance on Feb. 1. The 84-year-old mother of \u201cToday\u201d show co-host Savannah Guthrie did not have a subscription service that stored security video.<\/p>\n \u201cOver the last eight days, the FBI and Pima County Sheriff\u2019s Department have been working closely with our private sector partners to continue to recover any images or video footage from Nancy Guthrie\u2018s home that may have been lost, corrupted, or inaccessible due to a variety of factors, including the removal of recording devices,\u201d according to a Feb. 10 statement from the Pima County Sheriff\u2019s Department and the FBI.<\/p>\n \u201cThe video was recovered from residual data located in backend systems.\u201d<\/p>\n Authorities have not provided an estimated height or weight for the man as of Feb. 10.<\/p>\n Kyung-Shick Choi, the director of cybercrime and cybersecurity at Boston University\u2019s Metropolitan College,\u00a0told USA TODAY\u00a0that residual data can remain in the server systems that store, process or temporarily cache video files and metadata.<\/p>\n \u201cWith proper legal authority, law enforcement can retrieve this residual data from those backend systems, which is what appears to have happened here,\u201d Choi said.<\/p>\n The FBI did not specify if or how the tech giant played a role in retrieving the previously inaccessible footage.<\/p>\n Authorities previously said the doorbell camera was disconnected at 1:47 a.m. on Feb. 1.
